The HP Mini 1000
The HP Mini 1000 comes with a solid construction, a stylish and svelte case, a superb keyboard, and a super-bright screen. At first glance it looks like a sleek, all-black version of the Mini-Note 2133 but there are a number of refinements to the old design.The glossy black lid now has a subtle swirl pattern printed on it. The keys are no longer slick and shiny but nicely textured, and the screen has grown from and 8.9" display to 10.2". Despite the larger display, the HP Mini 1000 is smaller than the earlier model at 10.3 x 6.6 inches and 2.5 pounds, making it the smallest, thinnest netbook yet with a full 10-inch-wide keyboard.
Inside the changes are more dramatic. The 2133's poor VIA processor has been replaced by the tried and tested Intel Atom N270 running at 1.6GHz, backed by 1GB of DDR2 memory and running Windows XP Home Edition.
The standout feature of the Mini 1000 is its keyboard. It is a 10 inch wide, 92 percent keyboard which is a dream to type on. The keys have a solid feel and a slightly larger surface to hit. The layout is excellent, with none of the misplaced or shrunken Shift keys you find on almost all other netbooks. The wide touch pad is very responsive and its buttons with their unique side design are easy to press while allowing mroe room for the keyboard.
The 1024x600-pixel display is sharp and has a very wide viewing angle. The integrated GMA950 chipset does a fine job with Windows applications and full-screen video playback. The speakers are creatively placed behind a grill inside the laptop hinge, and although they don’t have a lot of volume, the audio clarity is superb.
For network access the Mini 1000 includes 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and a 10/100 Ethernet port, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity. You’ll also find a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a combination headphone/microphone jacks, an SD/SDHC/MMC slot, a VGA output, and a Webcam with microphone.
The Mini 1000 offers the standout solid construction and comfort as its predecessor but with dramatically better performance. The Mini 1000 is a worthy competitor in the netbook market offering the small size of the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 without the compromised keyboard.
